Rajasthan, formerly known as Rajputana, translates to Land of the Kings in English and there couldn’t be a better term to define the state. Evidently, the rich culture, ancient art & crafts, magnificent forts and palaces of the state are clearly evident in the rich history of kings and empires that have ruled the state from time to time.
The history of Rajasthan is believed to be 5000 years old and has a long timeline of different communities including Jats, Meenas, Gurjars, and Rajputs who have ruled the state for the longest time period. Kings like Prithviraj Chauhan, Chandragupta Maurya, Rana Sanga, and Maharana Pratap are some rulers who are an inseparable part of the history of the state.
Talking about the tourism in the state, there is a long list of forts and palaces that have emerged as crucial heritage sites in Rajasthan. These include Amber Fort, Chittorgarh Fort, Hawa Mahal of Jaipur, City Palace of Udaipur, Sardargarh Fort of Rajsamand, and so on. Particularly, Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur, and Jaisalmer are the destinations where one must go to explore the rich history of the state.
Many of the humungous palaces have also been transformed into luxury heritage hotels that still give a feel of the royal Rajasthani life to the guests. For example, at the Sardargarh Heritage resort, all the suites are named after the queens of King Sardar Singh.
These humongous palaces are popular for film shoots, pre-wedding photo shoots, and what not. For example is the Rambagh Palace of Jaipur, (built in 1835) has become a popular wedding destination now.
The historical tales of kings and queens have even inspired filmmakers to make films on such subjects. Either fiction or non-fiction there are a plethora of elements in Rajasthan that make it the most interesting state in terms of its historical background.
From museums to forts and from lakes to temples, there is no spot in Rajasthan that doesn’t carry a hint of the past life of the royal kingdom of the state. There is a back story to every tourist spot and there is a strong character behind every belief. Even the leisure activities like public gatherings and occasions like native festivals are carried out in royal and regal style with the folk music, folk dance, and authentic Rajasthani cuisine. These ingredients together make Rajasthan a land of the Kings in true terms.
