Famous for its sand dunes, Khuri is a small village about 50 km south-west of Jaisalmer in Rajasthan. Khuri is less crowded and provides a more enjoyable experience. Yet to make a prominent mark on the tourist map, Khuri has escaped commercialization and the hordes that descend to visit the sand dunes. Khuri Sand Dunes of Thar Desert can be reached from the village within 30 minutes or so.

Signs of development are visible in Khuri as more people discover it. Locals have also been quick to exploit the increasing popularity of the village. Staying in houses made of mud and straws is the USP of several homestays in Khuri. Visitors to Khuri split their sojourn into a night in the village and one in the desert. A night in the desert offers an ideal setting to star gaze. To entice the visitors, bonfires accompanied with folk songs and Kalbeliya dance routines are common.

Camel races and camel polo is also arranged for the entertainment of the travelers. If you are interested in birding or wildlife in general, Khuri offers vantage points to watch the Demoiselle crane or the Great Indian Bustard.

A trip to Desert National Park (DNP), about 65 km north, can also be clubbed with a trip to Khuri. One of the largest national parks in the country, DNP’s population consists of over 120 resident and migratory birds.

Located 40 km southwest of Jaisalmer, Khuri is a must visit for tourists seeking solitude in the desert. The Khuri Sand dunes offer you a memorable experience in the land of the Rajputs. Camp at the dunes, enjoy ride on camel back as the ‘ship of the desert’ and let the place itself take you to its mesmerizing heights. Spend evenings around campfire and listen to the songs of 'Kalbeliyas'.

Desert Safari in Khuri

Jaisalmer is known for its sand dunes and camel safaris. The desert safari is one of the best ways to experience the culture of the desert. One can venture through the colorful villages of Rajasthan as well as enjoy a wonderful camel ride if they opt for a desert safari. The camel is known as the ship of the desert and for the right reasons!

Khuri is within the Desert National Park, which stretches over 3162 sq km southwest of Jaisalmer to protect part of the Thar ecosystem, including wildlife such as the desert fox, desert cat, chinkara (gazelle), nilgai (antelope), and some unusual bird life including the endangered Great Indian Bustard.

  • By road - Khuri is located around 48 km from the popular Rajasthani state of Jaisalmer. The road route from Jaisalmer to Khuri is stunning to say the least. Several cabs and private vehicles ply between Khuri and Jaisalmer. Make sure you get to Khuri by 4.30 pm so that you can make it in time for sunset to the sand dunes. It’s an unbelievable experience.
  • By train - The nearest railhead is Jaisalmer from where you can take the road route. Jaisalmer is well-connected to all major cities in India by rail.
  • By air - The nearest airport from Khuri is Jaisalmer airport which is 46.3 km away. It will take you an hour to reach Khuri from the airport. Cabs and private vehicles are available for hire.
