84 Pillared Cenotaphs

Bundi is one of the most beautiful places in Rajasthan that is surrounded by the Aravalli Hills on three sides. Much like the rest of the part of the state, Bundi is also beautified with several palaces and other ancient structures.

From the serenity of the lakes to the marvelous architecture of the monuments, the entire town is quite attractive and is perfect for a weekend trip. Although it’s one of the lesser known tourist destinations, it’s as impressive as any other place in the state.

Talking about the tourist destinations in Bundi, the following list contains places to visit in Bundi that will let you witness its natural and historic charm:

1.Bundi Palace

Timings: 8 am to 5 pm

Location: Azad Fort

Bundi Palace is a majestic ancient monument that was built by Rao Raja Ratan Singh between 1607 AD and 1631 AD. Although some part of the palace is decaying by each day, the remaining portion is adorned with a series of turquoise and gold murals that light up the place. Besides, the Chinese-styled ceiling is divided into petal shapes and decorated with images of Krishna and peacocks.

2.Raniji ki Baori

Timings: 10 am to 5 pm

Location: Bundi Road, Adisal Singh Colony

Raniji ki Baori translates to the queen’s stepwell. It was built by Rani Nathavati Ji, the queen of Rao Raja Anirudh Singh in 1699. It’s a 46 meters deep stepwell with intricate carvings on its pillars. There is a high arched gate at the entrance leading to a narrow pathway marked by four pillars. This place is a must-visit for those who love to explore the rich history and heritage of Rajasthan.

3.Sukh Mahal

Timings: 9:45 am to 5 pm

Location: MDR 52, Teerath, Bundi

Sukh Mahal used to be the summer retreat for the ancient rulers but now it has been turned into a museum for the tourists. With the presence of Aravalli Hills in the background and the serene waters of the Jait Sagar Lake the place is soothing to the eyes and calming for the mind. It’s said that the legendary writer Rudyard Kipling stayed at the palace while writing his novel “Kim”.

4.Taragarh Fort

Timings: 9 am to 5 pm

Location: Nahar Ka Chauhatta, Bundi

Taragarh Fort is one of the oldest forts of Rajasthan that is also considered to be the first hillside fort of India. As you enter the fort, you will be greeted with three gateways namely Lakshmi Pol, Phuta Darwaza, and Gagudi ki Phatak. There are tunnels built within the fort that acted as the secured exit for kings in cases of danger. It’s an ideal place to gather information about the Rajput rule of the ancient times.

5.Lake Jait Sagar

Location: 2 km from the town

Jait Sagar Lake stretches for 1.5 kms along the hills and is one of the most picturesque places in Bundi. The summer palace Sukh Mahal is built on the side of the lake and there is a freshwater fountain near the lake. It’s easily connected to the city but still gives a peaceful shelter for nature lovers. You can also capture the natural beauty of the sparkling water during the evenings.

6.Ramgarh Vishdhari Sanctuary

Location: Bherupura Antri

If you want to take a break from the historical places and explore the natural landscapes of Bundi, then visit this wildlife sanctuary filled with different species of flora and fauna. It’s one of the unexplored wildlife sanctuaries of Rajasthan. You may spot animals like sambar, leopard, wild boar, chinkara, hyena, fox, sloth bear, etc in these forests.

7.Nawal Sagar Lake

Nawal Sagar is yet another name in the list of lakes in Rajasthan that offers an amazing view for a peaceful excursion. The highlight of this lake is that it reflects a mirror image of the entire town which is worth capturing. It’s an artificial lake with a temple in the center. Dedicated to Lord Varuna, this temple holds a strong religious importance among the devotees.

8.84 Pillared Cenotaphs

Timings: 9 am to 5 pm

Location: Devpura, Bundi

84 Pillared Cenotaphs is also known as Chaurasi Khambon Ki Chhatri constructed in the year 1683 by Rao Raja Anirudh, the Maharaja of Bundi. It’s a double-story structured adorned with artistic figures that were prevalent at that time. The upper level of the Chhatri is supported by 16 pillars while the lower section contains a large Shiva Linga.
