"Do work with love and love your work. Results won't disappoint you then". With this motto, Vidhi Kamalpuri, a student of commerce turned her passion for painting into a full time profession. #OhMyRajasthan! spoke with her exclusively to discuss how to run a startup at such a such a young age, that too about something which in India is considered just as a hobby.
Tell us something about your background? Like your education, schooling, field?
Myself Vidhi Kamalpuri. I am an Indian learning artist, creating fantasy and surrealistic oil paintings, miniatures, cards, wall art, and textile designs. I am a student of B.Com III year from Sophia Girls' College, Ajmer. I completed my schooling from St. Marys' Convent Sr. Sec. School, Ajmer. I chose a field of commerce but I realized my love for making oil paintings later. I have been to Jaipur for submitting paintings for competition and for participating in State Level Stupreneurs, Entrepreneurship Competition in 2017.
How it all began? The thought of startup and making your hobby, a profession?
I think it all began in year 2015, when i completed my schooling. I was always being known for making cards on various occasions in my school which gave me the idea of making different styles of the same to gift it to close ones occasionally. This hobby was a hobby till I was in school. My father gave me the thought of startup, to make it as a part time business when it all started increasing slowly with the help of social websites, personal efforts, mouth publicity and support from family and friends.
I changed my mindset completely towards this profession when the work lot increased, as it challenges my passion with each bigger task. It was fetching me very low and unsatisfactory returns in the beginning, but sooner my work started speaking with the different forte to catch the eyes of its lovers. There is really tough competition in this field but what actually makes your work look better is having love for it and passion to work tirelessly day and night. And I am still progressing with hope to learn something more in this world of adventures and challenges.
What is your business funda?
My funda is simple, keep on posting work in progress pictures, event session pictures, completed paintings etc and giving time to what you love and not to what you are forced to love. Mouth publicity, social websites and pages, and of course support from the family, friends and teachers gave me lot of opportunities and I tried to grab all of them in my schedule. My graduation studies in commerce is a part of this as it is letting me know marketing and business, challenging me to stand as an entrepreneur from a freelance.
How you got the support as we know that art in India is not as famous as a profession?
Hope is the rope of getting what you want.
Art in India is not so famous as a profession, but then Google everything, Google the marketing strategies of those who got everything. Follow your inspirations. Today, it is a necessity to understand strategies of competitors. To understand the market scope of my painting style is what I focus upon. Support is always from the sides of my teachers and juniors and my father, the person i admire the most as he give me the courage to face challenges. And I am glad that if I am working so hard then I’ll b an inspiration to someone someday.
Do work with love and love your work. Results won't disappoint you then.
Tell us about your team members?
Size of the team always depends upon the size of work. If it is a kind of work that I can do alone, I don't acquire team then. And if it is a kind of social event of making wall arts, then team consists of supervisors, photographers and artists of different age and forte. That’s a matter of time and work size. Artists of the same city where the work needs to be done are at preference, well I try my best to give a chance to upcoming artists to create art significance and to let them experience.
Tell us more about your work?
In the beginning, I was making only cards, bookmarks, calendars according to customer specification. Then I started trying oil paints after completing my school days, but i was scared to make portraits though I was in love with portrait photography. One day, I tried a portrait as asked by my college principle for some youth event. With the portrait of Mother Mary and Jesus Christ, my journey of making more portraits began, but this time with love for it!
Earlier, I used to copy my other inspiration artist work for practice, but sooner I developed my own forte, my own style of doing it with more practice which turned my favorite photography styles into paintings with more magical elements into it. I am still learning it by practicing more day by day with more challenges.
My ACHIEVEMENTS includes the following:
You are so young, how did you manage all this?
I am 19 years young girl on this planet in a type of age, where a youth have ultimate desire to work tirelessly. I have my regular college and not a private one, I give 4 hours minimum daily for my college classes, so I don't feel that I am devoting all of my time to my art career yet. Profession and completing commerce skills both are at priority, I work late night when I need to complete bigger task in short time. Managing it with all my passion is something which still needs to be achieved.
What kind of difficulties you faced?
September and February are the busiest months since last 3 years because of Teachers' Day, Management Day, Valentine's Week, which made me realize the need of a team.
It was difficult to complete multiple or big tasks like wall arts without proper team. However, meeting people, understanding their art, learning and adopting new techniques from committees and increasing contacts helped me a lot to approach more artists.
What are your future plans?
I love to continue making paintings of my forte, that is surrealistic and fantasy, to add more magical elements into it and to do it with all love and passion I have for them. Along with it, I am also searching for more students who are serious about this field. Making a different team for each different project helps each and every one to understand the power of teamwork, to experience different kind of people, and to gain more knowledge from each other. Thus studying more about it, is what I am looking for!
And this journey needs strength and support from the youth to make INDIANS realize the importance of the efforts that all artists do to make it a profession.
Vidhi, you are incredible in what you are doing, and we appreciate your efforts to take your love for painting to a next level by making it a profession and inspiring the young talent about it. We wish you all the best for your future!
