Tourists visiting Amer and Nahargarh forts in Rajasthan will have an add-on adventure experience of riding a Segway scooter other than elephant rides.

The eco-friendly and battery-operated self-balancing scooters are a hit among people abroad.

The state archaeological department has inked an agreement with a private firm, which will provide the paid scooter service to tourists from Wednesday.

“Heritage is our core strength; this time we are introducing a small adventure activity (Segway scooter ride) to attract tourists and provide them an enhanced experience,” said Nihal Chand Goel, additional chief secretary, tourism department. “The scooters are eco-friendly and will promote adventure activity.”

The scooter service will initially be started at Jaleb Chowk in Amer and Nahargarh fort, and the company will charge ₹200 for a ride, a tourism official said.

The ride will be available between 11am and 3.30pm when the elephant ride is not there, and after 5pm. The trial of the scooters was undertaken in December last year.

The union tourism department has sanctioned ₹99.60 crore to Rajasthan under the Swadesh Darshan Scheme for creating and renovating heritage circuits.

Among others, Kumbalgarh fort (Rajsamand), Nahargarh fort, Bala fort (Alwar), Ranthambore and Khandar fort (Sawai Madhopur), Gagron fort (Jhalawar), Chittorgarh fort, Prtap Gaurabv Kendra (Udaipur), and Meera Bai temple (Nagaur) will get a facelift.

Jaipur’s walled city will come up with another attraction other than heritage. “The union tourism ministry has sanctioned around ₹30 crore for illumination of market façade, Hawa Mahal, gates of Jaleb Chowk and Tripolia, walls of Jantar Mantar, Tripolia bazaar gate, and Kale Hanuman and Jama Mata temples,” said Goel.

Like Amritsar’s Golden Temple, Jaipur’s walled city markets will have designer lights, which will give a different experience to tourists in the evening, he said.

Under the central assistance, tourist centres and toilets will be constructed, drinking water, shelter, sitting space and parking will be provided, pathways and landscaping will be developed, and solar lights, signages, dustbins and CCTV cameras will be installed, apart from ensuring wifi facility.
