Mahashivaratri Hindus are a major festival. This is the main festival of Lord Shiva.

Shivratri festival is celebrated on Falgun Krishna Chaturdasi. It is believed that the beginning of creation is from this day. According to mythology, the beginning of creation on this day was due to the rise of Agniling (which is the great form of Mahadev). Most people believe that on this day Lord Shiva's marriage happened with Goddess Parvati. Mahashivratri is considered to be the most important of the 12 Shivratri that occur in the year.On the day of Mahashivaratri, Lord Shiva kept a poison called Kalkut in his throat. The sea which came out at the time of churning.

According to Shiv Puran, six objects must be included in Mahashivaratri Pooja.

  • Abhishek with Shiv Ling's water, milk and honey. Plum or vine leaves which represent the purification of soul.
  • Shiva Linga is applied after vermilion paste bath. It represents virtue.
  • Fruits, which reflect the longevity and satisfaction of desires.
  • Burning incense, wealth, yield (grain).
  • The lamp which is suited for attaining knowledge.
  • And the leaves of the Pan, which mark satisfaction with worldly pleasures.
