Jaipur, popularly known as the 'Pink City', it is the capital and largest city of Rajasthan and according to a 2011 census it is the tenth most populous city in the country. Jaipur is at the west of the Golden Triangle tourist circuit along with New Delhi and Agra. It is one of the most famous tourist destinations in India and is a gateway to other tourist destinations in Rajasthan like Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Udaipur and Mount Abu. The city of Jaipur was founded on 18 November 1726 by Sawai Jai Singh II, the Raja of Amer who ruled from 1688 to 1758. Jaipur was planned based on the principles of 'Vastu Shastra' and 'Shilpa Shastra' under the architectural guidance of Vidyadhar Bhattacharya, making it one of the first planned cities of India. Jaipur received its distinctive appearance and the epithet 'Pink' city during the rule of Sawai Ram Singh, when it was painted pink to welcome the Prince of Wales, later Edward VII, in 1876.
