Diwali 2018

The festivities of Diwali begin today with Dhanteras. It is an auspicious occasion in which it is customary to buy gold and gold ornaments. Also known as Dhana Trayodashi, it is the day when people welcome Goddess Lakshmi at their homes. Dhanteras is combination of two words dhan (money) and teras (thirtheenth). There is also a custom of worshipping god Dhanwantri on this day. Know more.

Devoting this day to Lakshmi ji, people lighten up their homes with diyas and lamps. In fact, there is also tradition of Lakshmi Pujan today as she is goddess of wealth and prosperity. To welcome Lakshmi ji, small footprints are made with rangoli colours which indicate her arrival in the home. Many people also buy silver and steel items on this occasion.

Mythological significance behind celebrating Dhanteras

As per mythology, a 16-year-old King Hima who's horoscope predicted his death by a snake bit on the fourth day of his marriage. But, his bride and laid out a heap of her silver coins and jewellery at the entrance of the sleeping chamber that was lit up with lamps. On that, Lord Yama arrived in the form of a snake and lost his vision due to luster of lamps and the jewellery and couldn’t bite him. Hence, this day is celebrated as Dhanteras.
