Significance of Bakra Eid

This festival falls on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the last month of the lunar year. One of the most dutiful admirers of Allah, Ibrahim was ready to sacrifice his son in order to prove his obedience. Seeing his devotion, God asked him to sacrifice a lamb instead. Since then, there is a tradition of sacrificing an animal.

How is it celebrated?

Basically, it is the festival of three days. On the last day of the festival, the sacrifice of an animal is must. The feast of animal (sheep or goat) is held.  It is the celebration of Ibrahim's supreme sacrifice and God's solicitude towards him. This animal is given to family, friends, relatives as well as distributed amongst poor. Apart from this, people prepare various kinds of dishes and a wide range of desserts. In India, it will commence on August 21, and continue until the evening of August 22.
