Udaipur: World’s smallest baby, aging fifteen days and weighing merely 470 grams goes through a successful heart surgery at Jeevanta Hospital in Udaipur.
The premature baby was born after a gestation period of 28 weeks to a couple living in Udaipur. He was born with a challenging heart disease and thus was kept in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), under the expert care of Neonatologist, Dr. Sunil Jangid.
During the initial investigation it was found that the neonatal was suffering from a pre-birth condition where aorta and pulmonary artery, major blood vessels of heart were connected even after the birth. As the last resort, surgery was needed to save the life of the baby and for the purpose Cardio Vascular & Thoracic Surgeon Dr. Sanjay Gandhi was called, as he had already performed similar surgeries.
With surgeon's timely assistance, the PDA surgery was successfully performed setting a milestone in the medical history of the state. The neonate was the lightest and youngest infant to go through such a major surgery successfully, as is claimed by Dr. Sanjay Gandhi, the surgeon. It is noteworthy that out of every thousand babies only three have such complex heart conditions. And considering the meager weight of the baby who has underdeveloped organs and immunity system, because of his premature birth, it is indeed a miracle that the tiny neonatal will now recover and grow like normal babies.
